The Georgia Institute of Technology, or simply Georgia Tech, is a public research university established in Atlanta, Georgia and belonging to the University System of Georgia. The humble beginnings of Georgia Tech can be traced back to the Reconstruction era of the United States which sought to build an industrial economy in the post-Civil War South. Thus the educational institution was founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, offering only a degree in mechanical engineering until 1901 when the school expanded its curriculum to include chemical, civil and electrical engineering. Georgia Tech would not be addressed by its current name until 1948, when the school changed its name to properly reflect its evolution from a trade school to a more formidable research and technical university.

Campuses and Degree Programs
Currently, Georgia Tech comprises six colleges which are divided into 31 departments or subunits. As a technical university, Georgia Tech is renowned for its degree programs in computing, engineering, business administration, the sciences and liberal arts, surprisingly enough. Georgia Tech’s primary campus is situated in midtown Atlanta, site of the Olympic Village for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The construction and subsequent annexation of several parts of the Olympic Village as well as the gentrification of surrounding neighborhoods has effectively enhanced the campus environment. Aside from the main campus, Georgia Tech also has a satellite campus in Savannah, Georgia, and several international satellite campuses in Metz (France), Athione (Ireland), Shanghai and Singapore.
Mascots, Team Colors and Athletics
Georgia Tech teams are known by a number of names: the Ramblin’ Wreck and the Engineers, for obvious reasons. The most notable, one that the university officially acknowledges, is the Yellow Jackets. For this reason the Georgia Tech mascot is “Buzz” the yellow jacket wasp.
However, Ramblin’ Wreck is also recognized as a Georgia Tech mascot. In old gold and white colors, the university participates as a member of the NCAA Division I level, competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference since the 1979-1980 season. Prior to participating in the AAC, the school participated in a variety of conferences, including Southeastern Conference, Metro Conference and at one point as independent competitor.
Dorms and College Life
In keeping with Southern traditions, Greek life remains pervasive in Georgia Tech’s campuses. Over 50 active chapters of social fraternities and sororities exist within the institution and around 26 percent of the undergraduate student body is affiliated with Greek organizations. This effectively provides the bulk of Georgia Tech dorms and social involvement.
Another aspect of Georgia Tech college life is its reputation for being difficult having been ranked repeatedly in the most stressful colleges and universities in the United States. However, it should also be noted that Georgia Tech is also listed as among the happiest colleges in the nation; showing that the severe academic stress does not get in the way of on-campus recreation.
Georgia Tech dorms are clearly divided into eastern and western areas where majority of the on-campus housing is situated. The East Campus dorms are populated by freshmen while the Western Campus is assigned to upperclassmen. Georgia Tech dorms also include the North Avenue Apartments, originally part of the Olympic Village.
