The University of Georgia, abbreviated as “UGA” or simply “Georgia”, is a public national university situated in the college town of Athens, Georgia. The 759-acre campus is a land- and sea-grant research university and is considered the flagship university of the state of Georgia.
UGA was founded in 1785 as the nation’s first state-chartered university and thus holds the distinction of being the oldest and largest of the state’s institutions of higher learning. Along with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the College of William and Mary, the university also claims the title of the oldest public university in the United States. Even older are the Big 7 of the Ivy League, because most were established as private colleges in the Colonial era.

The University of Georgia has three primary campuses, the largest one being located in Athens and sprawling over no less than 389 buildings. The two remaining campuses are found in Griffin and Tifton, Georgia. Aside from the primary campuses, UGA also has two satellite campuses found in Lawrenceville and Atlanta, along with several service and outreach stations all over the state.
In total, UGA facilities are spread throughout 30 Georgia counties amounting to a whopping total acreage of 39, 950. In addition to the Georgia facilities, UGA also has a residential and research center in Washington DC as well as three international residential and research centers established in Cortona, Italy, Monteverde, Costa Rica, and Oxford, England, within Oxford University.
Program Offerings
UGA offers a variety of degree programs with over 140 spread over a wide array of academic disciplines. The more prominent are: agricultural and environmental sciences, liberal arts or arts and sciences, business, ecology, education, engineering, environment and design, family and consumer sciences, forestry and natural resources, journalism and mass communication, law, pharmacy, public health, public and international affairs, social work, and veterinary medicine. UGA also has a graduate school.
School Mascot, Colors and Athletics
The UGA mascot, the Georgia Bulldogs, helps stir up team spirit and esprit de corps for intercollegiate sports teams that compete in the NCAA Division I’s Southeastern Conference. The school color, formerly old gold, was replaced in 1893 with black and crimson, referred to as the “good old Georgia Red”, due to the rivalry between UGA and Georgia Tech.
UGA is renowned as a founding member of the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA and has been competing since 1932. The proud pedigree of the Bulldogs is exhibited in their 39 national championships and 130 conference championships in all 83 years of competition. The UGA consecutive national championships, particularly the women’s gymnastics team which holds 10 titles with a five-year championship run from 2005-2009.
College Dorms and Student Life
UGA has over 700 registered student organizations and hosts one of the oldest Greek Letter organizations in the South. UGA dorms include the East Campus Village which hosts a variety of apartment-like dorms, as well as high-rise dorms found in West Campus. UGA dorms are more appropriately chapter houses and lodging that line Milledge Avenue and South Lumpkin Street. These Greek revival and Victorian mansions are maintained by different social fraternities and sororities which are considered to be one of the main attractions of UGA college life.
